Why are so few women business owners passing the seven-figure mark? Experts have attributed this trend to several issues, including math anxiety among women, the ''good-girls-don't-ask-to-get-paid” myth, and the ''superwomen-can-do-it-all'' complex. ''I believe it is a stereotype that women are more interested in feeling good and helping others than making a profit,'' says Nicole Fende, an independent consultant who runs a small business finance forum and author of the book How to Be a Finance Rock Star. Several women business owners who broke through that $1 million barrier spoke out on five ways to overcome these stereotypes.
<br></br>
<b>1. Embrace Your Balance Sheet</b>
Some sources contend that women, even the most successful ones, suffer from math anxiety, which hampers their ability to focus on their financials. A recent report by the U.S. Department of Commerce confirms that women are still shying away from science, technology, engineering, and math jobs, and a study commissioned by the National Academy of Sciences indicates that women teachers who are themselves anxious about their own math abilities are passing their anxiety on to young girls. The Los Angeles Times, which published the results of the study, said, ''Perhaps math-anxious teachers call on girls to solve math problems less frequently; praise boys more effusively; or simply imply that it's not important for girls to be good at math.''
<br></br>
Dawn Fotopulos is the founder of BestSmallBizHelp.com and an associate professor of business at The King’s College in New York City. She counsels women business owners on how to overcome math fears and manage their businesses better. ''Some women have difficulty asking for money feeling like they’re being greedy if they ask for payment,'' says Fotopulos. ''Many want to be liked more than respected. Women often abdicate the interpretation of their financials to their accountants and treat reading financial statements like riding on a motorcycle with their boyfriend; it's the guy's job to steer.''
<br></br>
If you are fundamentally not a math girl, admit it and get some help. ''Acknowledge the fear and lay out a plan to get some basic knowledge,'' says Fende. ''Look for free training, take a community college course, or pick up an easy-to-understand book. Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions and ask for help.''
<br></br>
Sarah Endline goes by the title of mastermind and chief rioter of sweetriot, a thriving candy company. She has used an open-book financial management system with all full-time rioters (her employees) since the company’s inception in 2005. ''I believe openness about all numbers, from revenue to cash balance in the bank, empowers team members and creates a higher level of accountability across the company,'' she says.

2. Conquer the Capital Conundrum</b>
Julia Pimsleur, founder and CEO of Little Pim, which produces multi-media language-learning products for children, raised $1 million in capital, and used it to hire staff and take her product line from DVD to digital distribution, including iPad and iPhone apps. Pimsleur believes that securing funding was more difficult because of her gender. She asserts, ''I may not have raised as much capital as a man would have in my shoes. As a woman, I feel the desire to ‘play it safe’ is fairly engrained.''
<br></br>
Knowing where to spend money is as important as having it to spend, according to Pimsleur. ''If I had it to do over again, I would have raised more capital and spent more on marketing. Launching a new brand in a very crowded and competitive space takes more than just grassroots marketing efforts such as social media.''
<br></br>
As a result of the funding issues women face, there are now several organizations focused on working with women entrepreneurs. WomanOwned.com features a list of resources that they view as ''woman-friendly'' capital sources. Golden Seeds is a venture capital firm that focuses on women entrepreneurs.
<br></br>
<b>3. Think Scale and Delegate</b>
Some women start businesses based on a passion or personal connections or interests, but then need to think through how they can scale up their concept for growth. Lynne Lambert, president/owner of NYC Subway Line, is a former actress with no prior experience in product manufacture and marketing. Inspired by a subway sign during a commute, she started out designing and marketing transit-based clothing in 1995. She was able to generate $1 million by 2007 and has since expanded her line to include accessories such as laptop cases featuring transit maps. She recently signed a deal with Apple for a New York–based retail test. If successful, the laptop cases will be tailored for other cities' transit systems and Apple stores. ''In order to hit the million dollar mark, I had to accept the fact that I needed to get help—especially administrative and sales manpower. I've found that women have a tendency to want to do things themselves because they don't want to over-spend and they are used to doing many jobs—both personally and professionally—without assistance. Maybe we feel we don't deserve the help. I had to have the concept of delegation knocked into my head. I couldn’t build my overall vision and grow while doing every job.''
<br></br>
When preparing to scale, Sharon Rowe, founder of Eco-Bags Products, also hit the million dollar mark in 2007 following an Oprah segment featuring her product. In addition to direct-to-consumer sales, she focused on private-label products, resulting in higher-ticket sales. “Expand cautiously,'' says Rowe, whose sales have exceeded $1 million every year since 2007. ''Expansion isn’t all that easy and it eats up capital. Expand slowly even if you are experiencing hyper growth [in terms of sales]. We considered every new order carefully and reined–in new initiatives. Early on, we made some mistakes. We added people and took on office space very quickly. We built out our infrastructure to accommodate our growth, but we weren’t ready for when our business retracted after the economy slowed down and competition increased.''
<br></br>
<b>4. Never Go It Alone</b>
Financial advisors are not the only people who should be in your inner circle as you build a business. ''A lot of people in small business believe it's all up to them,'' says Nell Merlino, founder, president, and CEO of Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence. ''Anyone who has been successful has had people helping them.'' Several of the women we spoke to admitted that because they were used to multi-tasking and handling both work and family duties prior to starting their businesses, that they were hesitant to ask for help in the early days of their entrepreneurial ventures.
<br></br>
Suzy Jurist of SJI Associates, a company that offers branding and graphic design services, started her business in 1991. She reached the million dollar mark her first year and has achieved gross revenues of over $1 million every year since then, generating more than $9 million in 2011. She credits her success to the talented people (currently 20) who work for her. She says, ''Focus on staff satisfaction.''
<br></br>
<b>5. Balance: Wife…Mother…Millionaire?</b>
Meg Hirshberg is the author of For Better or For Work: 7 Lessons for Entrepreneurs with Families and wife of Stonyfield Yogurt cofounder and chairman, Gary Hirshberg. Hirshberg, who helped grow Stonyfield to $370 million in sales, contends that many women who start businesses select ''lifestyle-adjusted businesses,'' rather than those that have potential for growth. ''Women may have a different definition of success,'' she asserts. ''If you build a highly successful business but lose your family in the process, you’ve had your eye on the wrong ball.''
<br></br>
Balancing a family with a growing business can be difficult, for both men and women. Says Pimsleur, the mother of two, ''I am not a supermom and not trying to be one. I am just one person. I try to treat my family and work life as a kind of yin and yang, not a tug of war. I think I'm a better mother because my work is creatively and intellectually satisfying.''
<br></br>
Rupila Sethi, principal of Aerial Design and Build, is another mom millionaire. She gave birth to two children while growing her business. Although she believes that her business could have grown at a faster pace during that time, she stresses the importance of family. ''You also need to be sure to allow for personal time so that your mind has time to breathe,'' she says.
<br></br>
According to a recent national study by American Express Open, women-owned companies account for almost 30 percent of all businesses (8.3 million businesses), generate nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue, and employ close to eight million people. The number of women-owned businesses has increased by 50 percent since 1997, exceeding the number of businesses started by men by more than 37 percent. Yet, just 1.8 percent of women-owned businesses generate more than $1 million in annual revenues.

About this time of year, I think it's important to discuss why business owners aren't getting out of the office, and what steps to take to get your business vacation-ready. It's also not just about discussing how to get out of the office, but why it's so important to take time away from your business.<br /><br />We all know that times are tough. The positive effects of the mixed economic recovery have not trickled down from Wall Street to Main Street and consumer confidence is slowly worsening. Combine that with the uncertain political landscape, the upcoming elections, and the worry over the expiring Bush tax cuts as well as potential spending cuts, and there’s a whole list of excuses why not to leave the office.<br /><br />On the flip side, as people see their business pick up and things get busier as orders come in or new clients come on, it's easy to say that you want to be on site and involved in the day-to-day activities to make sure that everything is running smoothly.<br /><br /><b>1. Test your contingency plan.</b><br />That's right—every business owner needs to have a plan in place for their staff to run the business in case of an emergency. If you've never implemented your contingency plan before or haven't in a while, this is the perfect reason to dust it off, update it, and make sure your staff is prepared to handle the day-to-day business in your absence, with minimal interruption of your vacation.<br /><br /><b>2. Take a step back can clear your perspective.</b><br />It's easy to get stuck on a problem and miss a simple, obvious solution. Sometimes being in the office day after day and week after week can cloud your perspective on changes that need to be made, policies that need to be scrapped, or partnerships that need to be forged. Taking a step back and recalibrating your business mindset can often lead to a more productive return to work.<br /><br /><b>3. Refocus your work/life balance.</b><br />It can be easy to push off a vacation or quality time with your family. But life will always be busy, your business will always need you, and there is never a perfect time to just get away. So make the decision to take a few days to focus on your family and reconnect with what’s really important—the people you love.<br /><br />Whether it's a long weekend at Hershey Park or 10 days at sea, it's okay to take a few days away. She is also a certified Coach, resume writer, holds impeccable credentials in the recruiting field, and has held many admirable interviews. My acquaintance asked, <strong><em>“Is Betsy your competition?”</em></strong></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">My response was to examine the question from multiple angles. <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The multi-pronged approach is a good practice for all business endeavors</span></em>. In the corporate environment, particularly sales, we view the world as being highly competitive. Being alert to everyone around you and embracing flexibility are requirements. This viewpoint is the exact opposite of corporate. Can this possibly be true?</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">We each have our unique talents that no one else can quite match. Until we clone people, our DNA ensures we are unique. Although someone may try to copy your work, it will never be 100% the same.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Returning to the question about Betsy being my competitor – Yes, we are in the same realm. The initial difference is Betsy brings the marketing side to the table whereas I’m sales specific. She is heavily trained in the career realm whereas I am not. Her credentials are impeccable. My role in the career transition market has always been to provide this portion of my work as community service.</p> <h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000080;">When your competition makes you blue</span></h3> <p style="text-align: justify;">With all that said, it sounds as if I’m blown out of the water by my “competition”. But there is always the other side of the coin or second side to every story. And this is what you need to keep in mind when you feel knocked down by your so-called competition.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">My credentials are having the ability to always get any job I ever wanted even as a teenager. Unknowingly, I used the sales trial-close technique at age 15. As an adult, I once applied for a job that at the time was several steps above my capability. I scrambled to grow into it, and it turned out to be the best of my career. All of my experiences led to writing a book on how to interview best along with community service work of teaching others how they too may have an easier time with the interviewing process.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Is Betsy my Competition? Job applicants, similar to anyone else who is about to purchase, need to go through their qualifying process to determine which road will match their needs best. In my opinion, we are on completely different paths. My talent or DNA type is instructing on how to use sales techniques to sell yourself on interviews, and I do believe it’s quite unique without competitors in this area. Nevertheless, it’s exactly these types of situations that make me a manager who delegates reluctantly. I know that if a project is in my hands, I can control how and when it gets done. If you want to be the kind of employee bosses love, do your job without being prodded, and once you agree to a task, don’t let it slide. We all have our fair share of acquaintances on Facebook or the people who post every 2 minutes, so hiding their posts may be a good place to start. This article suggests taking this list feature into account, before having to de-friend someone and worry about the awkward aftermath. The best part is that Facebook even suggests people you should put on this list, just like “People You May Know” section.</p> <p>To start this spring cleaning, just go to your “Friends” page, click on “Acquaintances” and then click on “See All Suggestions”. The right candidate has to be a person who has a deep passion for the mission of the organization. I would never advocate putting a twenty-something on a board just because he/she fills a demographic hole. The individual MUST believe in the organization mission, or it doesn’t matter how old he/she is, it won’t be a good fit.

<br />Those dedicated young professionals who really love an organization have oodles of value. It’s often up to the board’s leadership to know how to channel this talent productively. For example, many young professionals have large online networks and know how to build them, something many nonprofit organizations are trying to do.

<br />Young professionals are often very savvy at online marketing and social media strategies. Even if they are not willing or able to run the online presence for an organization, they are usually willing to teach someone else how to do so.

<br />Additionally, younger people tend to be more generous with both time and money than the boomer generation (based on disposable income). Many young people are more willing to give up time to an organization, which many groups will tell you can sometimes be more valuable than money."

When we signed up to have a booth, we looked at it as a way to get more exposure and maybe get a few graduating seniors interested in our program. This demographic is a great base for gsSCENE to draw members from because here are people that are "fresh" to the workplace and WANT to get involved! But after getting to the career fair and seeing the response, we were amazed!<br /><br />Our booth was slammed! I was so happy to hear all the students talk about how they had heard about us and how they really did want to get to know more people when they graduated and got into the working world. Of course, many thought we were hiring or trying to get interns and while some immediately left us when we told them we weren't, the majority stayed and seemed very interested in what all we had to offer. <br /><br />So hopefully at our April 7, birthday celebration we will have a lot of new faces! If you see someone at the event you don't know....go talk to them. Isn't that why everybody is there? To network and meet new people? For those of you that don't know, Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of Eat, Pray, Love. A New York Times Bestseller and even a hit movie staring Julia Roberts! Litchfield Books has set up for her to come speak at Pawleys Island Community Church. Just this past weekend gsSCENE participated in the 21st Annual Beach Sweep with over 26 participants. We have offered numerous professional development classes and are working on new initiatives for our members. At the conference I heard from several groups that had some awesome projects they did in their community. After the first game played, I knew this was going to hurt. Hurt really isn't the word I would use to describe how I felt the following day. Tortured, pained beyond belief and too sore to walk correctly better described how one's body would feel after playing in a kickball tournament. <br /><br />It never failed, no matter who I talked to everybody said the same thing, "I am too sore to even walk." And kickball is supposed to be for kids! But other than the days it took to recuperate, the kickball tournament was nothing short of a success!<br /><br />With 11 teams battling out, Handley's Pub was the champion. And the best part about the day was the $2,500 raised for United Way of Horry County. So, let me answer the question. gsSCENE is a program of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. You do not have to be a member of the chamber to be a member of gsSCENE. The memberships are done on an individual basis, so being a member of the chamber does not make you a member of gsSCENE. Confused yet?<br /><br />gsSCENE is run by a steering committee of young professionals who live and work on the Grand Strand. Every year, committee members rotate off and new committee members come on board. The steering committee is limited and those individuals are appointed by the chairman of the chamber board. This committee has the final say in all the events, functions and everything in between of gsSCENE. But most all gsSCENE ideas come from one of our subcommittees. These committees are made up of any gsSCENE members who would like to be involved. They are headed by a gsSCENE steering committee member.
